The choice to graduate from Blenddata was quickly made

Bram Reinders studied Data Science & Artificial Intelligence at Eindhoven University of Technology and carried out his graduation research at Blenddata. Bram says: “Blenddata offers a super pleasant graduation environment as well as a high level of knowledge. There is a huge amount to learn here.”

Positive vibe, fun assignments

In his spare time, Bram likes to play sports and does a lot. “I play football and enjoy go-karting,” he says. “Besides that, I like having a beer with friends.”

When Bram first came into contact with Blenddata, he was made aware of the possibility of doing his graduation project here. Bram: “This sounded interesting, so I decided to drop by and get acquainted. The introductory meeting felt right away. There was a positive vibe. Everyone was very relaxed, informal and I felt right at home. Blenddata had several graduation projects to choose from and these also appealed to me. So the decision to indeed graduate at Blenddata was quickly made.”

Whereas other graduate students often work alone, I actually had experienced people around me. I could draw on their technical knowledge. This lifted my project to a higher level.

Getting started with DBT

I incorporated this knowledge into a Python tool

In my thesis research, I delved into one of the techniques Blenddata works with: DBT. DBT is a data transformation tool that lets you break down complex SQL queries into clear, reusable SQL models, which are interconnected to form a network of models. I researched how to adjust the settings of these individual models so that the overall process is faster. I eventually incorporated this knowledge into a Python tool that will be used within Blenddata, and available to the whole world.

Guidance

Cosy and educational

I could count on the help of all colleagues

I had weekly meetings with my supervisor within Blenddata and my supervisor from the university. But actually, I could count on the help of all Blenddata colleagues. I was always welcome to work on my assignment at the Blenddata office and I took advantage of that opportunity. Working in the office was sociable and hugely educational. Everyone thought along with me and gave suggestions to improve things. This was very helpful. I learned a lot during my internship. Moreover, it helped me create something that could actually be used in practice. This is enormously motivating and made my graduation assignment really meaningful.”

It is considered important that colleagues have a good time. Is there something? Then this is listened to and acted upon.

Being there for each other

Direct part of the team

There is a lot to learn at Blenddata

“During my graduation, I was directly part of the team, even if I did something different from the rest. I never felt I was less important or lower in rank than other colleagues. I was also immediately involved in everything: from joint lunches and drinks on Friday afternoons to the monthly activities and evenings at the pub. When I was asked to join Blenddata after graduation as a junior data engineer, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Blenddata is a super fun organisation and an anything but static company. Moreover, the technical knowledge and expertise of our team is of a high level. There is still a lot for me to learn here. I’m very much looking forward to really getting to work in practice now and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into those challenges I encounter with customers.”
